OC Transpo, the public transit service across Ottawa and into Gatineau in Ontario, Canada, said between September 2024 and February 2026, the O-Train’s Line 1 experienced 435 unplanned outages among 59 elevators, typically concentrated during winter months when debris and salt impede elevator doors’ ability to open and close, the Ottawa Citizen reports. The information was part of OC’s response to an Ottawa lawmaker’s query about broken transit elevators serving stations on Lines 1, 2 and 4. October 2025 saw the highest number of unplanned outages on Line 1 with a total of 39 incidents. Lines 2 and 4 experienced a total of 91 unplanned outages among 26 elevators between September 2024 and February 2026. Once an outage is identified, OC said it will “act immediately” to inform customers, deploy repair staff and “implement additional accessibility measures appropriate to the station.” One transit user and disability advocate said she has witnessed lack of signs in some instances and flights of stairs that are particularly arduous for those with disabilities or with small children in tow.
