Norman "Norm" Leslie Benn

The Canadian Elevator Contractors Association announced that Norman "Norm" Benn, a Liverpool, U.K., native who devoted his life to improving the Canadian elevating devices industry, passed away peacefully on October 27 in Mississauga, Ontario, 2025, at age 88. Benn's professional journey began as an apprentice mechanic in the U.K., followed by several years of work in West Africa before settling in Ontario, Canada. Through his hard work, leadership and deep sense of integrity, Benn rose to become chief inspector for the Government of Ontario. After his distinguished public service, Benn continued to share his knowledge as a consultant, trainer and past chairman of the Norm Benn Training Centre in Markham, Ontario, where he mentored generations of mechanics and engineers. Among his proudest achievements were the licensing of elevator mechanics in Ontario, his contributions to the development of CSA B44.2 Code, as well as design improvements for elevator door locks and training mechanics for the EDM-B, D and F licenses. A celebration of Benn’s life will be held on November 15 from noon to 2 p.m. at Glen Oaks Funeral Home, 3164 Nine Line, Oakville, Ontario.
