On the heels of welcoming new escalators at McGhee Tyson Airport (TYS) just south of Knoxville, Tennessee, earlier this year, the Metropolitan Knoxville Airport Authority is bringing accessibility to the next level with new elevators in both the parking garage and main building, The Daily Times reports. Workers took the garage elevator out of service on January 5 to install all-new equipment in the elevator shaft ahead of anticipated completion in mid-February. Work on the main building elevator will then begin ahead of Southwest Airlines starting service at the airport on March 5, featuring daily service to Nashville, Tampa and Orlando. The arrival of Southwest is driving massive growth at TYS, which saw an 18.6% increase in passenger traffic in 2024 when it served 3.3 million passengers.
