Nexus Invests GBP2 Million in Metro VT Renewal

A major renewal of the vertical-transportation (VT) equipment serving the Tyne and Wear Metro in northeastern England is taking place, Rail Business Daily reports. Nexus, the public body that owns and manages Metro, is investing GBP2 million (US$2.5 million) in the project. The work, which is set for completion this summer, will ensure that “essential assets” at stations across the network will remain in service for the next 15 years. All three escalators at Haymarket Metro station are being refurbished. Ten lifts are being refitted and updated with LED lighting and digital help points across Chichester, Gateshead, Benton, Central and Haymarket Metro stations. At Monument Metro station, the lift will be replaced.
