Twenty-two years after installation, three Otis Gen2® elevators at the iconic Christ the Redeemer monument in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, will be modernized by Otis Brazil, Otis announced on June 11. The units will undergo a technological revitalization that includes replacing machines and controllers and installing new signage, fixtures and buttons. The Gen2 elevator carry visitors to the feet of the 30-m monument built in the 1920s and 1930s. Otis originally installed them in 2003, along with four outdoor escalators, and has maintained them since. Modernizing the equipment will help preserve the historic site and ensure it can continue to operate safely and efficiently with enhanced accessibility, Otis Brazil Managing Director Alvaro Netto said. Elevators will be modernized one at a time to ensure the other two remain operational to transport passengers.
