WMATA Foggy Bottom-GWU Station Escalator Project Underway

Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) has begun work to replace two escalators at the Foggy Bottom-George Washington University (GWU) Metro station in Washington, D.C., with plans to replace all six within the next year, the GW Hatchet reports. Through May, one station escalator between the street and mezzanine and another between the mezzanine and platform will continue to undergo upgrades including new, more reliable and energy-efficient motors. The Foggy Bottom-GWU station joins six other stations across the WMATA network undergoing modernization efforts. Work is part of a US$204-million escalator replacement project that began in 2020 to replace 145 escalators throughout the system by 2027.
