The world’s longest mountain escalator was unveiled to much fanfare near Chongqing, China, as Chinese New Year celebrations got underway at the end of February, outlets including Zamin reported. Easing accessibility for the many residents who must traverse the mountain terrain to work, shop or go to school, the Wushan Goddess Escalator spans 905 m and ascends 242 m (equivalent to an 80-story building). It reduces travel time from 1 h or more to only 20 min. Engineered with “mountain-embracing” construction, the system is surrounded by durable glass panels through which users can enjoy stunning views. “A distinct feature of the system is that it is not just a straight ascent, but a complex of escalators, elevators and pedestrian walkways that replicate the natural curves of the terrain,” the source observed. The Wushan Goddess Escalator, the source noted, surpasses the famous 112-m Crown Escalator that connects railway stations in Chongqing “in terms of both its size and construction complexity.”
