News outlets including the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat and the Boston Herald recently reported on a pair of projects set to transform the Boston South End and Allston neighborhoods. At Albany and East Canton streets in the South End, the Boston Planning and Development Agency (BPDA) greenlit a 5.6-acre, four-building plan from The Abbey Group that calls for mixed-use buildings up to 20 stories tall.

Scheduled to open in early 2022, that plan, Exchange End South, will include 22,000 ft2 of retail, 30,000 ft2 of community space and a 1-acre, publicly accessible park. In Allston, BPDA approved plans from a team that includes Ahold Delhaize calling for up to 868 residences, 11,000 ft2 of retail and restaurant space, 350,000 ft2 of office space and 10,000 ft2 of community art space off Everett Street near the Massachusetts Turnpike. Including a 29-story Kenmore Hotel, that project — Allston Yards — could take up to 10 years to complete.
