Derick Cortes

In December 2019, NYC-based elevator and escalator consulting firm Vertical Systems Analysis (VSA) announced the appointment of its first intern from the prestigious High Technology High School in New Jersey, Derick Cortes. A high

school senior, Cortes plans to study civil engineering in college. Cortes is joining the VSA team on site visits and using building-information-modeling software to create drawings and renderings for clients. VSA Chief Operating Officer Ed Voll said Cortes’ enthusiasm and quick ability to learn have been valuable. Observing Cortes was inspired by his father’s acumen as an automotive mechanic, VSA said:

“[Cortes] enjoyed learning about mechanical dependencies and their interworkings, and felt that the modern marvel of elevators would be a good place to learn about mechanics in an exciting city.”
